Search Process

To gather data concerning ondansetron’s effect on post-spinal hemodynamics, a search was conducted of the following databases: PubMed, OVID, CINHAL, and Google Scholar. Search terms included: subarachnoid block, spinal, spinal anesthesia, ondansetron, 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, hypotension, and hemodynamics. The literature search was conducted from November 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022.

Inclusion and exclusion criteria were established to guide the search process. The patient population targeted by our inclusion criteria were adult, surgical patients requiring SAB. We included any RCT, systematic review, or meta-analysis observing the influence of ondansetron on hemodynamics following SAB compared with placebo. We also required hypotension as a primary measured outcome. Articles were further required to be published within the last ten years (2012 – 2022) with full-text accessibility. Non-peer reviewed articles were excluded, as well as quasi-randomized control trials. Articles studying patients under 18 years of age, patients who received blocks other than SAB, and articles that did not include hypotension as a primary observed outcome were also excluded.

Using the above databases and search terms, we retrieved a total of 97 related articles – outlined in Appendix C. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to determine relevant articles. Duplicates of several articles were discovered in more than one database. Duplicates were excluded using Zotero, and articles were counted with the results for the first resulting database only. A total of 24 articles were found to meet all relevant criteria.
